A BOOK ON INSECTS.

DR. TILLYARD'S WORK, AN INTERESTING PRODUCTION. Dr.'Tillyard, of the Cavvthron Institute, Nelson, and an entomologist of worldwide repute, has done much for New Zealand farmers and fruitgrowers by his researches into the habits of insect pests and by his introduction of some of their enemies and he has, rendered them yet another great service by this production of a most valuable book entitled " The Insects of Australia and New Zealand" Angus and Robertson, Ltd., Sydney). This book, though primarily intended for entomological students, should be of use to ail people interested in natural history and of particular Value to all farmers, fruitgrowers and gardeners, for insects play a most important part in their every-day work and it is necessary for them to have a working knowledge not only of those species which destroy their crops but those which are their friends. One of the notable features of Dr. Tillyard's book is the number and. quality of the line drawings which illustrate it. These are on a largo scale and are invaluable for identification purposes. There are also some exceedingly fine colon red illustrations by Dr. Tillyard's wife. Although the chief aim of the book*is to accurately classify and describe' the vast number and variety of insects dealt with on scientific lines, Dr, Tillyard gives also a good deal of practical information regarding their habits and methods of controlling those which are pests. Until recently New Zealanders had to depend upon tiro work of European or American scientists for information on their entomology. In Dr. Tillyard's work they have a valuable text book which will surely be recognised as a standard work not only on native insects but also on those which have been introduced from other parts of the world.
