CATHOLIC EDUCATION.
treatment by the state. BISHOP LISTON'S CRITICISM. What he considered the present financial neglect of Roman Catholic schools by the Government was criticised by Bishop Liston, Coadjutor-Bishop of Auckland, speaking at the opening of the new St. Patrick's school, Wellington Street, on Sunday afternoon. He emphasised the fact that he was speaking for the Catholic bishops of New Zealand. "Catholic taxpayens in New Zealand pay for the education of Catholic children in Catholic schools,' 5 he said. "They pay again for the education of Catholic children in State schools. All this is right and proper. But they also pay every year the sum of about £200,000 for the education of children not their own in State schools. Is that just ? Will anyone argue that the injustice cannot be undone ?" • Continuing, Bishop Liston stated that a satisfactory remedy had been found and a proper way of having religion taught in the Christian schools of England, Scotland, Canada, and the Free State of Ireland. Why was this not the case in New Zealand ? He was convinced that bis fellow-countrymen were, by instinct, just and generous, and would, when they saw the wrong, find the remedy. "It remains for us to bring our case more prominently before them," he added. "We are determined to do so, and I speaK now advisedly of what I knovj. If the Religious Exercises in Schools Bill shouJd be passed by Parliament next session. we shall agitate might and main for our legitimate claims and shall call upon all earnest friends of religious education in the school to support us."
