KILLED AT CROSSING.
RECENT ONGARUE TRAGEDY. ENGINEDRIVER NOT TO BLAME. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. J TE KUITI, Sunday. The adjourned inquest concerning the deaths of Mr. G. McJSlroy, his wife, young daughter and baby, who were killed when their motor-car struck the daylight limited express at a railway crossing near Ongarue on February 24, was concluded last week Alice Gospondevich, one of the occupants of the car who was injured in the accident, said the car was travelling at 15 miles an hour and tho train at from 25 to 30 miles an hour. The enginedriver and the fireman of the train gave corroborative evidence. The former said he was of opinion that the crossing was one of the most dangerous between Auckland and Taumarunui. The coroner returned a verdict that deceased met their deaths owing to the motor-car in which thoy were riding being struck by a train, no blame being attached to the driver of the train. He added a rider that many motorists failed to take sufficient caro on railway level crossings.
