GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
PROGRESS OF CONCRETING. ANOTHER SECTION OPENED. STATE OF THE ROAD BEYOND. A section of 35 chains of concrete paving on the Great South Road, from the southern boundary of Papatoetoe to Kelly's corner, was opened for traffic yesterday, after being completed and left the customary 28 Hays for "curing. The section was started on March 7, and with reasonably fine weather the contractors would have finished it in time for Easter traffic. However, the broken I weather made this impossible. There is now an unbroken stretch of concrete from St. Ann's Bridge, just beyond Penrose, to a point 21 chains north of the Wiri Bridge. Fifteen chains of this section are already concreted arid will be opened for traffic in about a fortnight. The remaining six chains, up to the bridge itself, will not ba concreted until a next summer. In this approach to the bridge there is a very deep filling, cut out of a bank, and it has been thought better to consolidate it under traffic than to pufc the concrete on a soft foundation. 'The cutting will be put in. satisfactory condition for the winter. Beyond the Wiri Bridge about half a mile is concreted and most of it is already open for traffic. Good progress is being made with the various contracts further on, and it is probable the 12 miles of highway will be completed from Otahuhu to Papakura within two months. Between Otahuhu and the city 1| miles is under construction for the One Tree Hill Road Board, while the .Mount Wellington Road Board's two sections, totalling 1£ miles, have been in use for some time.
