An appalling- story of the superstition of country folks cosies from the Tillage of Ballots. " August® Gaillot,. aged 78, was suspected of sorcery' because ' : he did.' 'niJt .attend Mass. Another reason was that horses and sheep stampeded at the sight of him. Finally the old- man: fondled a baby,, and the little one died from convulsions next day. Later Guillot was crossing a field when some, sheep stampeded. . A shepherdess I cudgelled him and knocked him down, j The woman's brothers joined her in [ battering her victim. They left Guillot apparently dead. Next morning the injured man crawled to a {arm house and- begged lor. attention for his injuries. Set the farmer and his wife savagely attacked him and gouged out one ol his eyes with a pitchtorn. They also broke his nose. They pushed the now unconscious man under a hedge. There he was found three days afterwards. Guillot lingered for three months, and' has just died, a physical wreck.
