UNEMPLOYMENT.
Sir, —Whila the revuks ai &a aaeaw ployed unfortunately include all classes ci workers, skilled and unskilled, parhapt the most depressing aspect oi the problem is the sorry /act that tome &r« walking around Anxiously seeking » job, when others are working overtime. Bveryons will admit that from the viewpoint of physical »nd mechanical afficiency the trade anion eight-hour day ia sufficient for any man. Therefore, work, however casual, that any employer could give by abolishing overtime would be greatly appreciated by those out of work. Live And Let Live. Sir,—lt was disturbing to read the Rev. Jasper Calder's statement that " there were cases of people going hungry in Auckland that would bring tears to the eye if they were told." The surest way to remedy this would be for Mr. Calder to publish a list of the cases to which he refers, instead of crying to the Government, or blaming them. A rich city lika Auckland could (and would very quickly if definite facts and a lead were given) deal with hunger in its midst; but generalities and grumbling at the Government cut no ice with the well-meaning, but busy, public. There must be 100,000 people in the Auckland district who would be glad to help their 3000 out-of-work fellow-citizens if they knew how. If Mr. Calder could persuade the Christian congregations to give up caring for souls for a month and devote themselves to organising schemes of work and to hustling city, borough, and county councils into doing something, they might double their influence in the city hereafter.
