INTOXICATED MOTORIST
COLLISION WITH A POLE. A FINE OF £2O IMPOSED. CANCELLATION OF LICENCE. The collision of a five-seater motor-car with a telegraph pole at the corner of Great South Road and Green Lane Road on Friday afternoon resulted- in the appearance in the Police Court on Saturday of Phillip Robert Wilson, aged 22 (Mr. Peak), who admitted a charge of being found in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car. Senior-Sergeant Edwards said the car was driven along Great South Road by accused, who was accompanied by his father. After striking a stationary car higher up tho road, accused's car shot across the intersection with Green Lane Road and struck a telegraph pole at tho kerbside. Constable Thompson was summoned and found accused was more than intoxicated—he was " well drunk." His father, who owned the car, was also drunk. Mr. Peak, in appealing for leniency, said accused had taken some drink .during the day and was easily affected. The circumstances in which he now found him-, self would be a severe lesson to him. Accused, who worked on his father's farm at Pakuranga, had never been in trouble, previously. Remarking that the offence was very serious, the magistrate, Mr. Poynton, imposed & fine of £2O, cancelled accused's driving licence and made an order forbidding him to drive for 12 months. Accused's father, John William Wilson, aged 52, pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness and was convicted and discharged.
