BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH.

THE DESTRUCTOR SCHEME.

QUESTION OF THE TENDER. The Birkenhead Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeates, presiding. Regarding acceptance of a tender of £4350 for a combined destructor for the North Shore boroughs, it was decided to make it clear to tho Marine Boroughs Association that the Birkenhead Council had not confirmed the arrangement suggested, and required further information. In reply to an inquiry whether Albany andGlenfield applications could be included in the 200 guaranteed subscribers necessary to consider the installation of an automatic telephone service at Birkenhead, the district telegraph engineer.wrote stating that as the department already had an exchange at Albany, applications from that district should not be included. Applications from Glenfield settlers might be included, providing it was understood the rental for a connection there would be greater than for subscribers within two miles of tho Birkenhead post office, and would be governed by the length of line necessary to give service. The waterworks engineer reported the consumption of water during the month was 3,460,000 gallons. The level of Lake Takapuna was Ift. lOin. above sea level, compared with 2|ft. the previous month.

A remittance of £29 12s 8d for Birkenhead's proportion of heavy traffic licence fees, collected by the Auckland City Council, up to the end of December, was received.

Members expressed disappointment that tho scheme for a get of uniform by-laws for the four North Shore boroughs had apparently fallen through. It was ascertained that new by-Jaws were made operative in Devonport last April, and that the oher councils were also acting independently in the matter. A* resolution expressing appreciation of the council's assistance in the successful appeal against the refusal to licence the two motor-buses was forwarded from a meeting of shareholders of the Blue Star Motor " Service, Ltd. i Four permits for new buildings were granted.
