NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE.

GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. BY ARCHER. Hairera, who is engaged at Rotorua, has done his previous racing in Sydney, where he won several races as a two-year-old, fcis best effort being to win a Nursery Handicap at Rosehill, carrying 8.6 and running the mile in lm 42Js. As a three-year-old te had six starts, but his only placed performance that season was to run third 'in a three-year-old handicap at Hawkesbury, where ho had S.lO and was conceding ever 2st. to the winner, Knight Errant, who covered the mile in lm 4155. Hairera, vho is by Heather Mixture from Piraeus, is now a four-year-old and was a runner at Elierslie on Boxing Day, when he finished about the middle of the field in the Christmas Handicap.

On his fdrm at Takapuna, where ho notched a second and a third in the leading handicap events. Spoony should have a brstclass chance in the Rotorua Cup. Tile only thing against his prospects may be the circular nature of the track, for Spoony has not been beginning well in his recent engagements and it will bo to his disadvantage if lie fails to get a position early.

After racing at Te Kuiti Ring the £>ell wa3 taken on lo Rotorua, where he is freely engaged. Ring the Bell has not yet. won beyond a mile, but he is in great heart at present and is the class of horse that might do well in a race like the Rotorua Cup It is more than likely that he will race prominently in any of the events he contests.

Heisler won the two five-furlong events at Rotorua last year and he will be on hand to contest the sprint events there again this year. The Lord Multifid geldinz waged a successful campaign at the summer meetings oil the west coast of the South Island, where he won four races. His latest winning exploit was to capture the Blair Memorial Handicap (six furlongs) at Greymouth on January 4, carrying 10.0 and beating Birthmark f8.8). Nincompoop (10.10), and several others in lm 17 4-ss. Heisler is a fast beginner and this will always be in his favour on small courses..

The Catmint mare Alonsoa is on the improve, and at Takapuna last week she ran a good second to Cantab in th® Moana Handicap. A repetition of that form should make her dangerous among the hack q'ass at Rotorua, where she has two engagements on the opening day.

Since his third to Archeno and Quondong in a mile hack event at Elierslie last month Lord Guy has only had one. run. but did not show up on that occasion. It i, ay have been that he was feeling the effects of his previous outings and he may display some form at Rotorua, where he -will be competing among a moderate class of hacks.

Dave is in excellent order to tackle his engagements at Rotorua. _ The big sprinter has raced prominently without getting into u place among the best sprinters in his last few starts, so that he should be capable of extending hie opponents in his coming engagements. Dave carries weight well and should shortly return to the winning list.

A hack that has attracted attention by his recent exploits is Branson, who has notched three wins and a second in his last seven starts. Branson's latest victory was attained in the Warea Hack Stakes at _ New Plymouth in December, when he carried 9.0 end defeated a useful field of hacks over six furlongs in lm 14 4-ss. The Greyspear gelding should show up. among the class engaged in the high-weight handicaps at Rotorua.

J. Williamson left for Rotorua yesterday with Dave, Hairera, Clarus and Charlady. R. E. Brown took Star Comet, Abbey Day, and Rina Mangu.

Thursby was entrained for Rotorua yesterday. The Thurnham gelding is to compete in the cup on Saturday and may make a decent showing, although his chance would be better with the sting out of the ground. Thursby finished seventh in the Takapuna Cup and has since been working freely. J. Buchanan is booked io leave for Rotorua this morning with Serong, Gold Fern and Tall Timber. Form at Te Kuiti points to Day Guard and Miss Vera having excellent chances m the Rotorua Cup, and the pair will io doubt be well fancied. When they met in the Te Kuiti Cup last week Day Guard secured the honours by a long neck, but on this occasion Miss Vera will meet bim 7lb better and this may be sufficient to turn the scale in her favour. Still Day Guard is sure to make a bold bid for victory. TARANAKI PROSPECTS. REVIEW OF THE FIELDS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH. Wednesday. The weather is fine and promises well for the opening of the Taranaki meeting t*imorrew. Although the fields are small they are of good average quality, and of sufficient size for the course. The track has a good sole of grass, but is on the hard side.

Probably there will bo six runners in the Cup, Income being a non-starter. Piuthair probably will be favourite, but Mint Leaf will be next in request, for it is understood he is E. George's elect rather than Te Monanui. Royal Mint is also to run, and the three will be ridden as follows: Te Monanui (L. G. Morris), Mint Leaf (J. Barry), Royal Mint (T. Bound). It is reported that R. Reed will ride Piuthair, but this is not confirmed. The track may be too hard for Town BanW. Opa, ißi whom a rider has yet to be announced, looks like being very hard to' beat. Benzora (R. J. Mackie) promises to see a short price in the Flying Handicap. First Acre. for some reason, is unbefriended to date. Pouma is a possibility, and it is understood Nadarino has been working very well. , . , . , . ~ Pendennis and Rehutin read best in the Waita-a Hurdles, unless Little River takes it into his head to do his best all the way, a risky thing to anticipate. Silver Mine, who galloped an exceptionally good five furlongs at Hawera yesterday, should show up well in the Juvenile HandiSome smart maidens are in the Moturoa Hack race. Royal Acre. Erin-go-Bragh and Skypoint are three. In the absence of Mint Leaf, Blend Probably will be favourite for the Okato Hack Handicap Bent may be the next best. The Lamb and Benhomme appeal most in the Mimi High-weight, with a preference for The Lamb, patiently ridden. A very fair lot- of hack spnnteis will be seen out. in the Timaru Handicap. 1 " fire, Billikins and Sovena may be a likely trio. THE DUNEDIN MEETING. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The Wingatui track was in good order for the final gallops this morning.
