PREPARING SHIP FOR SEA. i EARLY DEPARTURE EXPECTED TO GO INTO DOCK. ALL HOLES FIRMLY COVERED. [by TELEGRAPH.—OWN correspondent.] GISBORNE. Monday. There was little change in the position of the damaged liner Northumberland this morning. Salvage operations wera continued over the week-end, and every effort made to facilitate the departure of the vessel for Auckland, where she will go into Calliope dock for repairs. The pumping operations have succeeded in keepi?ig the vessel afloat in practically the same position as sho was ou Saturday, while the temporary patching of the holes in the vessel's bottom has proved satisfactory. It was reported this morning that little water remained in No. 1 and No. 3 holds, and preparations are in progress for sealing down No. 2 hold to prevent the" water rising during the voyage to Auckland. A further step in the covering of the holes was taken yesterday, when an additional mat was placed over the three holes and carefully bound with st«l ropes. Additional reinforcing work is - being carried out to-day, and it is hoped that the vessel will be in good condition to proceed to Auckland to-morrow or oti Wednesday. No official announcement has befen made regarding the Northumberland's escort to Auckland, but this afternoon the tug Toia left for Wellington, and ifc is understood the Terawhiti will be in attendance during the liner's voyage. " It is not proposed to move any morei of the vessel's cargo, which wiil be taken to Auckland and transhipped there. Tho small portion already discharged at Gishorno will be sent forward to ports' of destination as early as possible.
