OBITUARY.
MR. A. K. HARRIS. RAILWAY TRANSPORT OFFICER. [MY TELEGRAPH.' —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Monday. The death, has occurred of M#. A. It. Harris, general superintendent of transportation of the Railways Department. Mr. Harris died on the day of his retirement on superannuation, after 42 years' service. He was born at Waipipi in 1869 and joined the Railways Department at Auckland in 1884 as a cadet. Ho was appointed statio.imaster at PapakuVa nine years later and successively was relieving officer in the Auckland district, clerk in the traffic manager's office at Wanganui and in the traffic superintendent's office at Wellington. Mr, Harris was appointed traffic clerk at Auckland in 1908 and transferred to a similar position at Dunedin in 1912. Subsequently he was assistant district traffic manager at Dunedin and at Christchurch and district traffic manager at Wanganui and Auckland. Ha was appointed, in 1924, to the position at Wellington, which he occupied until his death. Mr. Harris leaves a widow, one son and one daughter. At the conference of district traffic officers sitting in Wellington a resolution of condolenca on the death of Mr. Harris was passed. Conference was then adjourned. MRS. JAMES HURLEY. An ( pJd resident' of Northeote, Mrs. Elizabeth Hurley, wife of Mr. James Hurley, died on Sunday, at tho ago of 83. Mrs. Hurley, who was born .and married at Somerset, England, arrived at Auckland by the clipper Northumberland 43 years ago. She is survived by her husband, four sons, three daughters, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom resido at Northeote. Tho sons are: Mr. Alfred Hurley, Mr. Walter W. Hurley, Mr. Albert J. Hurley and Mr. Thomas H. Hurley, and the daughters are Mrs. Edward Stihvell, Mrs. A. W. Millar, and Miss Bessie Hurley. The funeral took place at tho Birkenhead Anglican cemetery yesterday afternoon, tho Rev. Carew Thomas officiating. MR. ELIJAH ROOSE. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] PUKEKOHE, Monday. The deat'li occurred yesterday of Mr. Elijah Roose, aged 84 years, who had been associated with Pukekohe as a settler for over t)5 years. He came to Now Zealand when 17 years old and settled with his father on a property now comprising the eastern part of Pukekohe borough. He was one of tho garrison of Pukekohe East Church when it was attacked by the natives on September 14, 1863, and in later years was a lieutenant i;i the volunteers. After the war Mr. Rooso carried on the farm established by his father and worked it until about four years ago, when he retired. Mr. Roose had held the positions of chairman of the Pukekohe Road Board and chairman of the Pukekohe School Committee. He also served as a Sunday School superintendent. He leaves one son and 'five daughters. There are 12 grandchildren. MR. J. H. OLIVER. [BY Ti'XZGP.Am.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA. Monday. ■ The death Has occurred of Mr. John Henry Oliver, a well-known and highly respected farmer of the Bethlehem district, at ths age of 54 years. Mr. Oliver was born at Mangorei, near New Plymouth. He engaged in farming at Koru until about 24 years ago, when he settle# at Bethlehem. Mr. Oliver converted his property into one of the show farms of the Bay of Plenty, and went in for fattening cattle. He was a member of the Tauranga Rifle Club for many years.
