TRAIN CONTROL METHODS.
STUDY IN AUSTRALIA. OFFICERS LEAVE DOMINION, . [by telegraph.—own correspondent.]' WELLINGTON, Monday. With the object of studying methods of train running in Australia, two officers of the Railway Department, Messrs. J. W. Smith and E. S. Brittenden, left for that country recently. It is understood they will be away for three months. The officers will go into ail the practical details of what is known as the "train control system" of traffic operations which, in turn, depends upon a very thorough telephone system, by which every station is brought into immediate contact with the train control officer at the central station. _ . The main principle of the system is that this officer is kept supplied with full information as to, the actual position of all trains in his division at any time, and is thus able to give verbal instructions covering all train movements. It is claimed that the adoption of the system will enable a considerable reduction to be made iin train delays. On the return of the officers to New Zealand arrangements will be made for the system to be thoroughly tested at Wellington and Christchurch.
