CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF.

|! DOMINION OPEN TITLE. THE: FIRST TWO ROUNDS. DR. ROSS LEADS THE FIELD. SIME AND DOBSON SECOND. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Friday. The weather was fine for the opening cf the thirtieth annual New Zealand golf championship meeting at Miramar links to day. There was a full complement of en :ries—eighty—and as this includes se -eral prominent Australian golfers, including Hector Morrison, amateur champion of New South Wales, additional interest is added to the meeting. With few exceptions all the leading amateurs ot New Zealand are competing and there is a full list from the professional ranks playing. ['laving conditions were of the best. There was a good light and a gentle southerly breeze, consequently some good cards were returned. The result of to-day's play leaves Dr. Ross (Dunedin) in the lead for the open championship by three strokes. Details are as follows :

To-day's play places Dr. Ken Ross, of Dunedin, at the head of the list, a position well deserved by his two rounds of 74 each of very fine golf. A. G. Sim>; never looked like being far behind. He put, lip excellent golf generally. His putting was deadly accurate. \V. R. Dobson, of Concord, Sydney, repeated the golf he produced when he won the Canterbury amateur championship at the Easter tournament of the Christchruch Golf Club.

The hero of many championships, Arthur Duncan, is well up, and played two consistent rounds. E. J. Moss missed putts in the morning round and spoiled his afternoon round by taking two sixes to finish. T. H. Horton obviously played too carefully in the morning, but improved in the afternoon, and but for striking trouble at the ninth he might easily have reduced his score bv two strokes. A. J. Shaw spoiled his chance of an excellent morning round by taking a six and a five at the first two holes and also a seven at the seventh.

Kapi Tareha played two good rounds, a blemish in the morning round being a seven at Xo. 1. In the afternoon his putting was sensational and he holed five successive threes at 30. 31, 12, 33 and 14.

E. M. Macfarlano did not appear to let himself out in the morning, returning an 80. However, in the afternoon he improved and with two holes to play he wanted five and four for 72. At the seventeenth he had the makings of a four, but the hall was lying iri a cavity on the green and he took five. At the eighteenth he struck trouble. After a good drive the ball lay so that an iron club was necessary. He unfortunately sliced and the hole cost him seven. H. J. Shanks and L. Seifert both owe their position to two rounds of steady play. Hector Morrison, as was expected, is well up, and but for taking seven at the third and six at the seventh in the morning, a_nd also taking eight it the seventh in the afternoon, would havo been further up. Goss played well in the morning round excepting two sevens. H. R. Blair slipped five putts in the morning round. J. Mcintosh was all astray in the morning in direction and distance. J. C. Bidwill did not produce his .Wanganui form. Dr. Ross' card read: — Morning. —Out: 5, 4, 7, 3, 4 } 3, 5, 4, 5 —4O. Tn: 4, 4, 2, 4, 3, 4. 4, 4, 5—34 74. Afternoon.—Out: 5, 4, 5, 4, 4, 2, 5, 4, 5—38. To-morrow the third and fourth rounds of ;~fche open championship will be played and; there should be some excellent golf, especially as there are indications of the weather remaining. fine*
