GREAT FIRE IN SYDNEY.
THREE LARGE BUILDINGS. MUCH DESTRUCTION CAUSED. FIERCE OUTBREAK CHECKED. By Telegraph—Press Association Cepyrigbt. (Received 12.5 a.m.) A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Oct. 11. A disastrous fire occurred in the* city. The outbreak originated in the large fivestorey premises of the Australian General Electrical Company in Mountain Street, which were gutted. The flames then swept through the adjoining buildings occupied by the General Power and Farming Company and the skin and hides stores of Messrs. J. Moxam and Company. .The fire was one of the, most fierce and spectacnlai seen in Sydney for a long time. A wall of flame 50ft. high swept across the street, threatening many other stores, all of which contained highly-inflammable matter. Myriads of glowing cinders descended upon roofs for a distance of four blocks. It was several hours before the outbreak was subdued. A large force of firemen with difficulty prevented tho firo spreading to a numbfer of tall buildings in the vicinity. The premises which were destroyed contained very heavy stocks, and the damage is estimated at £200,000.
