BANK TELLER'S THEFTS.
TOTAL OF £660 STOLEN. SUPPRESSION OF CREDITS. MONEY SPENT IN GAMBLING. [BY TELEGRAM. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] DUNEDIN. Monday. In tho Police Court William Alfred Sandman, a teller in the Bank of Australasia, aged 30 years, was charged with tho thoft of £660 from the bank. Mr. Hanlon, for accused, pleaded guilty. 0. K. Tennent, sub-inspector of the bank, detailed his investigations into a reported shortage in accused's cash. The system used to conceal tho thefts was tho suppression of credits on the day when tho manager verified the cash. The sum accounted for in this way was £645. Tho alteration of two cheques made up a further £ls. Detective Sneddon said that accused had mado a statement admitting tho thefts. Ho said he was married and had two children. Ho entered tho employ of the Bank of Australasia in 1911 and during tho past 12 months had been in Dunedin. In November, 1925, ho was in debt to the extent of £6O owing to sickness in his family, and his creditors pressed him to pay. Between November 8, 1925, and October 6, lie had taken £660 from the bank. Most of the money was spent :in gambling and on horse racing. Accused was committed to the Supremo Couft for sentence. He was admitted to bail in his own recognisance of £2OO and two sureties of £2OO.
