AMERICAN LABOUR.
WORKERS FN MOTOR TRADE. AIMS OF THE FEDERATION. Australian and N.Z. Criblo Association. (Reed. 5.5 n.m.) NEW YORK. Oct. 5. A message from Detroit says the American Federation of Labour, which opened its 16th annual convention there yesterday, has announced an ambitious programme for the employment of trades union labour in tho motor-car industry of America. This industry hitherto has not been completely served by union labour. The employers announce that they are bitterly opposed to any interference with tho relationship which at present exists between them and their workers, which, they claim, has been particularly beneficial. The Labour Federation, however, which is jealous of having workers in such an extensive industry outside its ranks, has affirmed that it will take all possible steps to induce them to join the fold. The federation asserts that this step is essential to maintain tho strength of organised labour as a whole. It is intimated that tho reason for tho federation's convention being held in Detroit is because that city is tho centre of the motor-car trade. A representative of the Employers' Association said their workers were better paid, enjoyed better home conditions and wore generally more contented than workers anywhere else. Organised labour had contributed nothing to their prosperity. Their standards were set at Detroit and they would not be dictated to by tho American Federation of Labour.
