PROMOTION TO ADMIRAL. j A DISTINGUISHED CAREERSastralian and N.Z. Cable Association. 5CR«cd. 5.5 c.ra.) LONDON, Oct. (i. "Vice-Admiral Sir Lionel Halsey has ]been promoted to the rank of admiral. Admiral Sir Lionel Halsey has had a Histinguished career in the Navy. He joined the service in 1885. He was mentioned in despatches for his services in the defence of Ladysmith, and was subsequently, in 1901, specially promoted to the rank of commander. In 1905 he was promoted to captain, when he had the distinction of being the youngest officer of that rank in the British Navy. In 1913 he commanded PL.M.S. •New Zealand during the Empire cruise of that vessel, and was in command of the ship at the actions •which occurred in the Heligoland Eight and at Dogger Bank. He served at the hattle of Jutland in H.M.S. Iron Duke, the flagship of Viscount Jellicoe. In 19.17 ho became Third Sea Lord at the Admiralty. He was created a- knight in 3919, and has been comptroller and treasurer to the Prince of Wales since 1920. He accompanied His Royal Highness to New Zealand in that year. In 1918 Sir Lionel was appointed rear-admiral in command of the Australian Navy, in succession to Rear-Admiral Leveson. He relinquished this position in the following year.
