SCHEME FOR ADVANCEMENT.
QUARTER OF MILLION FUND
PROPOSAL FROM AUCKLAND.
Tho Auckland Presbytery proposes to urge the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, which meets in Wellington next month, to inaugurate a fund with the object of raising £250,000, to be devoted to the general advancement of the Church. This course was decided upon at the meeting of the presbytery yesterday afternoon. The matter was introduced by the E«v.- L. H. Hunt on behalf of the E,ev. J. Lamb Harvey, and was considered in committee, after which the announcement was made.
The District Young Men's Bible Class advised that it was prepared to be responsible for' the conduct of one church service each month. The offer was referred to the Lay-readers' Association, and the secretary was instructed to convey the thanks-of the presbytery to the Bible class.
A number of grants to home mission stations were made. It was mentioned, however, that some of the 'stations had neglected to forward copies of their bal-ance-shoots. It was stated "that in some cases it was not possible to gauge the position without this information, and it was suggested that no graDt should bo made when this was lacking. The suggestion was not adopted, but it was decided to ask those concerned to take note of it.
Permission was sought by the managers of the Avonriale Church to sell a number of sections at stated prices on account of the strain placer! on the finances by the rates incurred. The reqnest was declined. The Rev. F. Thompson, who had supported the application, announced his intention of appealing to the General Assembly.
The managers of St. David's Church were granted permission to sell a house on the site to be occupied by the new church.
