STATUS OF PROFESSION. FORMATION OF NEW UNION. The amalgamation of three organisations of State school teachers into the Victorian Teachers' Union was celebrated at a dinner given by the Kchication Service Federation in Melbourne lately. : The president of the federation, mr. A. J! Dunlop, said that, though the dinner was given by the federation, it was being held to celebrate. the passing of the fed : eratipn and other representative bodies and the birth of the Victorian Teachers'Union. The union, he said, aimed at giving the teaching professfon the pjace which it deserved in the community. He hoped that the union would not confine its attention to questions of salaries and : conditions, but would .help in the establishment of a central council, where regulations affecting teachers could be discussed, ... arid in the establishment of a teachers' paper: * - Mi?. J. , Stewart said, that he hoped to see the formation of a : national educational federation in- Australia. Federations of teachers were achieving great objects in England And America arid Australia had a greater educational heritage gtftd splendid raw material. The Federal Attorney-General, Mr. Latham, had suggested the establishment of a research university at Canberra. He hoped that fi»ich a university would have an education branch where research work could be carried out.

The Acting-director of Education, Mf. M. P. Hansen, said that he had spent his life in endeavouring to raise the status of the profession. Already the profession -stood higher in public estimation than it did in 1890, when he had entered it at a salary of £BO Ja year "and 'payment by Results.
