WASTAGE OF COAL.
SCHEME TO SAVE " SLACK." A CHRISTCHURCH COMPANY. ' ''-'V . ♦ [BY telegraph.—own correspondent. ] CHRISTCHURCH. Sunday. It is estimated that from 400 to ,500 tons of coal are wasted by the coalmines of New Zealand every day. In every ton of coal raised from any mine there is a certain percentage of "slack," which is practically useless and has, to be cast aside. This problem is a very serious one for the mines of the Dominion. Attempts have been made to solve it in various ways, but so far the Government and the mineowners have not been successful. There has now been formed a new Canterbury company, which is at present building works at Sockburn.. It hopes to produce from this waste product a new "smokeless coal," which will be on the market by the end of the year.
