PROBATION FOR THREE YEARS

"DANCE HALLS AND CIGARETTES"

" It"is the old story ; the girl has Been going round cheap dance-halls, smoking cigarettes and she is right out of clothes which she xvas buying on the time-pay-ment system." said Major Gordon, of the Salvation Army, in the Police Court yesterday, when Thelnia Francis Goodley, aged 19, admitted six charges of stealing articles from a house" at which she -was employed as a. domestic servant. The charges included two dresses valued at £B, and ladies' hosiery, gloves,' a fountain pen and monev, to the value of £2 19s 6d. ■ ' ' •

"Major Gordon suggested that if accused were, placed on strict probation and ordered to# make restitution she would probably reform. She was working in an excellent : home and although she had been there only a few weeks her employers were willing to take her back. The Magistrate, Mr. Poynton: It is very generous of them. Chief Detective Cummings said all the articles had been recovered-with the exception of one dress, which the girl burned. She became frightened when asked for another dress which she hud taken. She returned that one, but burned the other. Her parents died when she was 11 years old, and as a result she had lacked parental control. The Magistrate: She is young and without parents and deserves some consideration. He added that he was, perhaps, giving accused a chance she did not deserve. She would be. placed on probation for three years, during which time her wages, amusements and companions would be under the supervision of the probation officer. An order was* also made for restitution.
