BEAM WIRELESS.

SERVICE WITH AUSTRALIA.

ANXIETY AS .TO CHARGES. ■ Aiistraliiin and N.Z. Cable (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. . 21. A press cablegram from Australia says, Australian business' men are anxious to prevent'charges' being fixed on too high a scale for communication services under the' system of beam wireless. The cablegram alleges that- negotiations between the English and Australian authorities are proceeding behind closed doors. Sir Joseph Cook, Australian High Commissioner in London, stated officially that nothing whatever was being done in the direction indicated-

British Post Office officials are most anxious to fix low. rates, but that they have found the subsidiary companies in the Dominions are opposed to reductions. It is stated that on some days the tests made of the Canadian beam wireless service were successful over the whole 24 hours, when the plant had been used continuously. On other days, however, the results had been disappointing. It has been found that messages are received far better at the Canadian end of the system than they are when transmitted from Canada and received in Britain. Experiments with the aerials are being continued with a view to securing the best possible results. The outlook for the service is described as promising.
