THE TRAM ACCIDENT.

STATEMENT BY CONDUCTOR.

CONDITION OF MOTORMAN:

A statement concerning the sensational tramcar accident in Symonds Street on Friday evening was made yesterday by the conductor of the car, Mr. C. Boyce. He says he noticed the car going fast when it was opposite Stonehurst and as it was nearing Wellesley Street he realised that it was out of control. He then applied the hand-brake, but to no effect. "It would have been foolish to pull down the trolley pole," he said. "The car was going so fast that there would have been a possibility of its bringing down the overhead wire. Then we might all have been electrocuted."

The motorman, Mr. J. Phiipott, who sustained a fractured skull through falling off the'car near the Maori War Memorial, is reported to be progressing satisfactorily.
