" A RATHER DARING THIEF." Six: MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. Described as rather a daring thief, Eric Montgomery Eerinie, aged 24, came up for sentence in the Police Court on Saturday. The previous week he had pleaded guilty to stealing a suitcase valued at £4 13s and a pair of slippers valued at 6s lid. - • " Very little is known about this man, except that he has been convicted in Australia for the. conversion of & motorcar," said Sergeant Calweil. "The - theft of the suitcase whs a daring one. He loitered around George Walker's auction rooms, waiting his chance to Steal it. The slippers were taken from the front of Hannah's shop in Queen Street." Accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on each of the charges, the terms to be cumulative. ' - RESISTING A CONSTABLE. - A plea of guilty was entered by Charles O'Connor, aged 32, to a charge of resisting a constable. Accused was drunk and disorderly in Wellesley Street, said Sergeant Cahvell, and was apprehended by Constable Hyncls. •After some struggling lie said he would go quietly, but as soon as ho was released he attacked the. policeman and finally had to be handcuffed. "He has rather a bad list for a young man," added the sergeant. "He was before the Court a few days ago." The magistrate, Mr. J. W. Poynton: You have a bad record. You are fined £2, in. default seven days' imprisonment for being drunk and disorderly, and for resisting the constable you are -sentenced •to one" month's imprisonment. UNLAWFULLY ON PREMISES. Two elderly men, John Edward Lynch and James Makin., pleaded guilty to being found by night on the premises of Watney Sibun in Symonds Street without lawful excuse. "They were found sleeping ir; an outhouse at the back of the business premises/' said Sergeant Cahvell. "When questioned, they said they had nowhere else to go, but they are both fairly ablebodied min. However, Captain Bavins, of the Salvation Army, offers to assist them if Your Worship will give them a chance."
