AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS. SOMERVILLE'S NARROW WIN. K . :■ | UNIVERSITY'S GREAT EFFORT. | The outstanding match in the Auckland hockey competition on Saturday was provided by Somerville, the uncrowned champions, and University. After an exceptionally keen contest, the competition leaders won by 3 goals to 2. ' St. Luke's proved too strong for Stan-' lev.- and won by 7 goals to 0. An interesting tussle resulted from the meeting of Mount Eden and Somerville Colts, the former winning by 1. goal to 0. Wesley created a surprise by defeating Arete by 2 goals to 1. The opening stages of the contest between Somerville dnd University were, marked by spirited forward movements by the latter. Some splendid concerted attacks were held up by excellent, defensive play by Somerville's fullbacks. Baildon "and Roberts. Dr. Leonard sent his side away in a clever combined movement,' Clayton and Burton gaining ground with fine cross-passing. The movement reached the circle, where Clayton. with a judiciously placed shot, scored for University.

Somerville came' away with a' stiong rush that was ■ stopped by Hume. E. Burton gained possession, and took into the circle, his shot being deflected over;the goal by Cooper. . Both forward lines hit the' ball about freely and exciting play - was witnessed in both circles." Eventually Somerville pressed hotly, after'a breakaway from midfield, and-E. Watts. evened the scores with a pretty shot. • > University replied with a great offensive that-completely baffled the defence. Cooper gave sticks in. his circle, just as Burton coaled from close range. Unfortunately for University the goal was disallowed and only, a penalty corner resulted. University was unable- to take advantage of the corner hit and half-time arrived with the scores: University; 1, Somerville, 1.. Upon' resuming. University launched two strong attacks, which were" well cleared by 'Rogers. Somerville's forwards, with i;lever stickwork and clean passing, gained University's circle and. Clandett scored. University responded with .sharp assaults, and-Greenbank evened the score from a rebound off Cooper's pads. ' After "close midfield play Somerville launched a fine central attack that was successfully, completed' by Seccombe scoring. University made great efforts to equalise, but was unable'to break through the' opposing defence. A splendidly contested game ended in n, win for Somerville by 3 goals to -2.

EASY VICTORY'FOR'ST. LUKE'S . St. ,'Luke's, ,in .opposition to Stanley, played " With great dash," and the forwards executed some fine offensives. Stanley's play suffered' ,in' comparison,' the forwards not combining-at all .well. St. Luke's proved dangerous, in a strong central attack, which wit 9 only stopped on the circle's edge by Anthony. . , ! A further• rush .met with success when Hookham ran' through and scored. T. Giles, with splendid ' shots ' increased St. Luke's scor'e'to three'goals. St. Luke's-.con-tinued, to monopolise the play , arid Duncan scored twice.- A series of further rushes saw j. 'Giles net. Then T. .'Giles broke away and' g'oaled- easily,... making, the half-time score:—St. Luke's, 7; Stanley, 0. St. Luke's appeared to take matters very quietly in the second half, and although they held a territorial advantage, they failed to add to their first spell score. -A very "one-sided game ended • in St. Luke's favour by 7 goals to 0. MOUNT: EDEN BEAT. SOMERVILLE COLTS. . ■ The...early play in the .game between Mount Eden and Somerville Colts was in favour of Mount Eden, the forwards, playing with '.fine.dash : and good ,combination. Many excellent attacking' movements were launched and .the. Colt's backs had a strenuous time ..checking the invasions. ■ Mount* Eden was .first to be dangerous. Areta v/sb much jmore on the ; attack, the, forwards adopting- hard-hitt-ing and fast following up tactics .that severely tested Wesley's . defence. The play of the Wesley forward* was mainly of an individual character , and few/good ; concerted movements were seen. Areta's forwards, by means of hard crosshitting, set up a long sustained attack, but failed to penetrate the defence. The spell ended- without score. • . : . ; - upon resuming Hayson nut Areta . ahead by scoring a fine goal. Wattam equalised with a' good goal after a concerted attack. Wesley - continued aggressive tactics, and Fitt put 1 his aide in the lead by scoring from a raeleo in the goal-mouth.
