While engaged in working the wellknown .towing launch Emma on the Northern Wairoa River" early yesterday morning four young men, H. Stanaway,, S.'Fatt, W. Stanaway and W. Samuels, had a narrow escape from losing "their lives. They were in the vicinity of the Mongonui River when they experienced engine trouble and stopped the engine to make au investigation. While this was in progress there was au explosion which blew, all the men out of the boat into the river. After the explosion the , launch caught fire and eventually sank. The men, who, fortunately arc all good swimmers, were able to reach the river . bank, and beyond the loss of their personal effects and an unpleasant experience, suffered little harm. , The launch, which is a . total loss, was owned by, the Tangowahiiio Sawmilliug Company and was insured with the New Zealand Insurance Company for £3OO, but the owners estimate their loss at fully £2OO above the insurance
