SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITY.

SUM OF £350,000 PROVIDED, LAST YEAR'S EXPENDITURE. [Br TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON, Friday. Proposed appropriations for buildings for education purposes in the Public Works Estimates total £350,000, against £480,000 voted and £564,863 expended last year. The principal items arc as follow, the amounts expended last year being given in parentheses Public Schools, £21)5,000 (£269,898); training • colleges, £24,000 (£42,018); technical schools, £60,000 (£37,903); secondary schools, £135,000 (£124,423); university colleges, £70,000 (£82,679); native schools, £IO,OOO (£8284); schools for feebleminded, £5500 (£627); industrial schools and. probation homes, £II,OOO (£4981).

THE TOURIST RESORTS. ROTORUA IMPROVEMENTS. ADDITIONS TO WAITOMO HOSTEL [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER. J WELLINGTON, Friday. Votes proposed in the Public Works Estimates for the development o£ tourist resorts total £55,000, against £54,950 voted and £43,486 expended last year. The Botorua votes include:—Drainage system, £13,003; drainage "works and water supply, £3515: electric works and telephone line, £5000; improvements to reserves, £1000: reconstruction of Blue and Pavilion bath-houses (on account), £SOOO. For additions to the Waitomo Caves hostel a sum of £IO,OOO is. provided; a similar sum was voted last year and £3578 was expended up to March 31. For furniture, fencing, tracks, etc., a further £IOOO is proposed. Other items are:—Milford Sound accommodation house (on account), £5000; Russell Club-house, £500; Helensville Hot Springs (additions), £750. NEW PUBLIC BUILDINGS. THE NEW LONDON HOUSE. AUCKLAND DISTRICT VOTES. [BY TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON. Friday. The estimated amount required for public buildings throughout the Dominion during the current financial year is i £508,U00, as compared with £336,500 voted and £284,178 expended last year. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER.] 'WELLINGTON, Friday. Reviewing the expenditure on works for the, Defence Department, the Public Works Statement says that considerable progress has been made with the development of the mobilisation base, and training camp at Waikato camp, Ngaruawahia. Four magazines for big explosives and th& earthworks for others have been completed. Three married quarters and one single men's quarters have been, erected. A kitchen and two mess-rooms, capable of accommodating 1000 men, have been provided, and were in full use in February, The water-supply system is now complete. Surface drainage * arid roading have effected considerable improvement to the camping area. The construction of the large ordnance depot buildings for ..reception of stores is now being undertaken. In view of the development of Waikato camp little money was available for works elsewhere, although many of these are of considerable importance. Several new drill halls are urgently required, while mess-room accommodation, married quarters, and store-rooms at Burnham camp are very" necessary. It is hoped to complete the more urgent of these works this year, but the majority must he delayed pending the completion of Waikato camp. Another urgent work similarly affected is the development of the important, recently acquired aerodrome site at Hobsonville.

Purchase of land for the aerodrome site at Ilobsonville cost £26,028. There is no vote this year for the aerodrome. This year's votes, with kst year's expenditure in parentheses, for the camns are as follow: —X garua wah ia, £50,000 (£22.12.6); Burnham, £IO.OOO (£4133); and Trentham, £40,000 (£10.863). There is a vote of £IO,OOO for hat hour defences; last year's expenditure was £1275.
