Chief-Detective Ward told the Court that the accused had. been working for Hatrick and Co. for seven and a-half years, latterly as a storeman. The goods had been taken between January 0 and July 16 and had been sold for £3B 19s. Nothing else was known against him and he came from a good home. In asking that a term of probation be imposed, Mr. J. W. Neilson said that Waters had recently taken to drinking. Nobody was more surprised than his employers when the thefts were discovered. Mr. E. Page, S.M., imposed a sentence of 12 months' reformative detention on the first charge and on each of the others ordered the accused to come up for sentence when called upon within 12 months.
