LAND FOR SETTLERS.
BLOCK OF 7/) 10,000 ACRES. £ PURCHASE BY GOVERNMENT. SHEEP STATION NEAR GISBORNE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] GISBORNE, Thursday. The negotiations for the purchase by the Government of To Wera station, in the Matawm-Tahora district, have been completed, and the property, which comprises nearly 10,000 acres of good land, mostly improved, will in due course bt opened for settlement. The owners of the property were Mr. J. O. Field and Dr. W. A. Chappie. They acquired the station some years ago from Sir James Carroll, in whose possession it had been for many years. Te Wera is situated about ten miles from Matawai and Rakauroa and has good road communication with both townships. The price paid for the property by the Government is stated -to be between £6 and £7 per acre, so that the total amount involved is over £60,000. II; is intended to open the block for selection about February. The block will probably be cut up into about five sheep runs. There are about 3500 acres of bush, but the balance is fully improved, and although the land is situated in an area notorious for its broken nature, it is good easy rolling hills.
