MOTORISTS' INTERESTS.
QUESTION OF SPEED LIMIT. THE MAMAKU BUSH ROAD. The council of the Auckland Automobile Association met last evening, the president, Dr. J. H. Lawrie, presiding. There were also present: Messrs. G. M. White, H. Curd, H. Jones, F. G. Farrell, R. B. Spinks, G. Henning, J. B. King, W. Phillips, A. Grayson and T. G. Julian. A letter was received from the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce advocating uniform speed limits. Several members remarked that speed limits were undesirable and that the best means of ensuring that vehicles were driven with care was to enforce the regulation which required drivers to exercise full caution irrespective of the provisions of by-laws. A resolution embodying this opinion was carried. The Waitemata Bridge Committee wrote asking; for support for a campaign. The opinion that a bridge across the harbour would be advantageous to motorists was freely expressed. It was resolved to grant the committee a donation of £5. The district engineer of Public Works reported he had fully 'investigated the complaints alleging that the Mamaku Bush Road had been prepared to trap motors in wet weather, and had found the allegations were without foundation. While the contractor's teams were 011 the road,: motorists would be given assistance free of charge. He warned drivers of motor vehicles that it was not claimed the Mamuku Bush Road was capable of carrj'ing winter traffic. The Minister of Public Works advised that schemes for the relief of unemployment did not include any improvement work on the East Coast Road. The secretary reported that the police had given assurance that, motorists who were not .in possession of driving certificates when asked to produce them would be allowed a brief period of grace.
