UNITED STATES SWEPT. SEVERAL DEATHS CAUSED. PEOPLE SLEEPING IN PARKS. GREAT RUSH TO THE BEACHES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. NEW YORK. July 9. The United States of America are in the gr : p of a heat wave, which is taking toll of life, particularly in the large cities, and the thermometer is still rising. At Nogales, Arizona, the temperature is 112 degrees. In New York it is 91 degrees. This and the humidity of the atmosphere has caused much suffering, especially owing to the congestion in the subways, because of the transport workers' strike. Thousands of people are sleeping in the parks or crowding on to the beaches in an effort to obtain relief from the heat. Three persons are reported to have died in New York. Hundreds of others are prostrated. At Chicago the temperaturo is 93 degrees. Ten persons have died there and many others are prostrated. In many places in the Middle West the abnormal heat has been accompanied by tornadoes. A storm swept through Indiana and southern Michigan and resulted in six deaths. The New England States have also suffered greatly from the heat. At Springfield, Massachusetts, the temperature is 98 degrees.
