HATCHERY AT TOKAANU.
BUILDING TO BE ERECTED. SUPERIORITY OF TAUPO FISH. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Friday. The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. R. F. Bollard, announced this morning that the work of erecting a trout hatchery at Tokaanu, on the banks of Lake Taupo, would be undertaken forthwith, so as to have it ready for next season. "Keen supporters of the treat hatchery at Rotorua," said Mr. Bollard, "have questioned the necessity for the erection of a hatchery at Tokaanu, but from the reports supplied I must disagree with them, Hitherto the bulk of the trout ova and fry required for stocking and replenishing purposes throughout the Dominion has been supplied from the Rotorua hatchery. In view of the superior quality of the fish m Lake Taupo, the question arose some little time ago as to the advisability of securing the future supplies of ova for general distribution purposes from the fish in the rivers running into this lake. The matter was referred to the chief inspector of fisheries. Mr. L. F. Ayson, and that officer entirely approved of the proposal." The Minister added that at the commencement of next season, if all went well, the whole of the rainbow trout ova and fry would be supplied from Lake Taupo.
