AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY

THE ROYAL SHOW FIXTURE. PROGRESS OF ARRANGEMENTS. CANVASSING FOR ENTRIES. The General Committee of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. W. W. Massey, presiding. Conditions for carrying oat the Royal .Show in Auckland were received from the Royal Agricultural Society. It was stated the Royal Society would contribute a subsidy of £1250 and would provide the championship ribbons. The chairman said the conditions were similar to those under which the two previous Royal Shows had bee.i carried out. Considerable discussion took place regarding the methods to be adopted in canvassing for entries for the Royal Show. It was" proposed that the president and secretary should visit the breeders of the province with a .view to obtaining entries. A number of speakers strongly supported the proposal. Messrs. 11. Brown and S Hodge offered to undertake canvassing at their own expense. The chairman said he was pleased to see the great interest being taken in the show by the members. He had always been of opinion that a representative of the association should visit the breeders in the different districts. It was necessary to get the utmost measure of support from all possible exhibitors. The motion was carried. It was also decided to send schedules of the Royal Show to all breeders of pedigree stock in New Zealand, The Supply o! Green Feed. A report relating to supplies of green feed for the Royal Show was furnished by the stewards, Messrs. S. Hamlin and S. Hodge. The chairman said an ample ■supply of green feed- would be required, as exhibits were coming from all over the Dominion. When making inquiries in the South Island for judges he had been informed that many who would be suitable judges intended to exhibit. It was decided to erect slieds for sheep and pig exhibits at the Showgrounds at a cost of £I2OO. Mr. W. J. W. Pascoe was appointed publicity officer for the Royal Show. A letter was received from Mr. R. Millen protesting against the disqualification of his horse. Lord Roberts, in the maiden trotters' class at the last spring show. The secretary, Mr. A. D. Stanley, said a cheque for £lO prize money had been forwarde, to Mr. Millen, who had returned it, claiming that he was eiatitled to £ll 3s, as Lotd Roberts had been wrongfully disqualified. Two of the stewards in the class had certified that Lord Roberts was not a maiden. It was" decided to uphold the decision of the stewards. « Road on Otahuhu Property, A report on tiie negotiations with the Government relating to portions of the association's property at Ota.huhu taken by the Railways Department was submitted by Mr. M. G. McArthur. It was stated that originally the department took a quarter of an acre, which left the property with a very small frontage. " There was then some- sort" of' promise by the department that an overhead br'dge would be erected-to provide* a better entrance to the property. No compensation was paid for the land, and the matter drifted on for some time. Subsequently the department took another area of two and a-half acres, which left the property without any frontage. The department now proposed to form a road on the two and a-half acres, giving a large frontage to the property, and to build an overhead bridge giving access to the road. It was suggested that the association ' should contribute half the cost of the road construction. 4 Mr. McArthur said the matter had been considered by the Finance Committee, which recommended that- the association should forego any claim for compensation, for the land, provided the department constructed the road. The committee's recommendation was adopted.
