SECRET FEARS.
Many people have a secret little fear which they rarely mention. It may be fire, water, darkness—or some absurdly trivial affair which ought not to cause a tremor.
The lion in the path may be a calf. She who flees from a cow could walk quite calmly through a herd of them if she only made herself realise it is mere curiosity which makes them follow her across the field.
Some people make a boast of their fears. Whether the special terror be infection, spiders, that of standing at a high open window or near the edge of a railway platform, much harping on the subject causes friends to regard them not as objects of pity but as terrible bores. Fear -of being laughed at is another of these bogeys and causes many a siri of omission. "The others" probably won't laugh, and if they do their little derision will not hurt half as much as yon expect. « Why make your life a burden, dreading things which may never happen? The demon of fear is an unsubstantial spirit after all, and a bogey bravely faced disappears back into nothingness.
