The last matches of the third round of the White Shield Rugby competition were played on Saturday, when City and Ramblers drew at Wharepoa and Old Boys beat Physical Training by 1G points to I'2 at Parawai. ' The Piako Rugby representatives defeated Hauraki Plains by G points to 5 at Ngatea on Saturday, after a hard,fast game. Although Piako won by only one point, they were somewhat superior in all departments of the game. The first score went to Hauraki Plains, Molesworth scoring a fine try. Johnson converted. A few minutes later a passing bout by Piako in which all ths backs took part, saw Towers score at the corner. Magill failed from a difficult angle. The second half opened at a fast pace and although both sides made frequent efforts to score, sound defence kept the score down. An infringement by Hauraki Plains gave Piako a chance and Magill landed a goal. This proved the final score of the match. The Piako team gave a glimpse of the formdisplayed against Thames. The backs all played well. Arkle at five-eighths, and lieQuarters on the wing, were outstanding. Goldsbury as rover played his best game this year. The outstanding forwards were Young, Burcbell and Grice. The Hauraki Plains team lacked combination. The backs were erratic, although some fine solo efforts were witnessed. Their outstanding men were in th» forwards wen Booth, French and Gill were always prominent. Molesworth was the best of the backs , , The result of Saturday's match places Piako one point in tb lead for the Poland Cup with, five points, Hauraki Plains being second with four points. ■ The Piako second grade team defeated Wailii at Te Aroha on Saturday by 6 points to 3.
