HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES.

QUESTiON OF REFUNDS, BOROUGH COUNCIL'S POSITION. The liability of local bodies for refund of heavy traffic fees in the case of destruction by accident of a motor-vehicle, was discussed by the Newmarket Borough Council last evening. ' The town -clerk said that as fees were received they were paid to the Auckland City Council, which attended to their distribution. The council might be called on to refund a fee to the owner of a lorry which was destroyed by fire or withdrawn from service. A letter was received from the Public Works Department advising the council to retain a sufficient portion of the fees to cover possible abatements. In respect to the legal position of vehicle owners resident m the borough who paid heavy traffic fees to the Auckland City Council in error, the Municipal Association advised that the fees, could fee claimed for the borough if the vehicle was garaged in the area and used on the borough streets.
