GAOL FOR STOWAWAYS.
CANADIAN EXPLORER GASES. THE PAYMENT OF EXPENSES. The five stowaways, Henry James Chapman, aged 21; Frederick Harper Davidson, aged 18; John Smart, aged 23; Albert George Larson, aged 18; and John Walker, aged 54 (Mr. Schramm), who were discovered on the Canadian Explorer an houp after the ship left Auckland on Tuesday, pleaded guilty in the Police Court yesterday. Sergeant Rowell said the vessel was hove-to at Tiritiri after the stowaways were located. A launch was summoned from Auckland by wireless, and ( the steamer resumed her voyage after a- delay of five hours. A representative of the shipping company said the launch hire had cost £3 15s. There had been considerable annoyance caused, and the maximum penalty was desired.
Mr. Schramm: The witness has nothing to do with the penalty. The Magistrate, Mr. Poynton: ! We cannot impose full penalties just because they are desired. The only thing is for the* shipping companies to keep a stricter watch on vessels leaving the wharves. The spirit of adventure is enough to make youths attempt to stow away. It was stated Smart and Chapman had previously attempted to secrete themselves on a vessel.
Mr. Schramm said Walker had hoped to return to his wife and did not have enough money for a fare. Chapman and Smart were sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment and were ordered to pay 15s expenses each. Walker, Davidson and Larsen were sentenced to seven days' imprisonment and ordered to pay 15s expenses each. Larsen was subsequently convicted for unlawful conversion of a motor-car.
