YACHT PACING.

PONSONBY CRUISING CLUB. CONTESTS FOR LIPTON CUP. EVENT WON BY RAKOA. The Ponsonby Cruising Club hold a serios of races on Saturday afternoon, starling and finishing off the western tide deflector. The weather was ideal for yachting, a wholesale breeze from the south-south-west blowing throughout the ruce. Tho principal event was the contest for the Linton Cup. This is confined to tho 22ft. class, each club having tho rijjht to challenge for tho trophy annually. Einlit boats took part in the race, which was won ( by the Rakoa, representing the Richmond | CruisinK Club. Five contests havo now j boon held. Tho first year tho cup uas , won by Valeria, representing tho Victoria j Club; tho next three years saw Mario win . it for tho Akarann Club; and now Kaltoa has had the honour of securing it for the ; Richmond Club. Rakoa was well handled by j Mr. Vic. Riley and deserved tho victory, j which wns a popular one. Tho launch Marion I).. owned by Mr. i Jim Donald, was used as flagship. Die ; officials in charge of tho racing wore:— Starter. Mr. 11. R. Arthur; judge. Mr. W.I Joynt; time-keepers, Messrs. Arthur and. H. Ifewson. Details ara as follow: — TITE LIPTON CUP. Tho clubs and their representatives wore: i —Ponsonby CntisiiiG Club, Kokiri: \ ictoria Cruising Club, Marie: Akarana Yacht Club. Venus; Takapuna Boating Club, forest Gold: Drvonport Yacht Club. Varuna: Point Chevalier Sailing Club, Valeria; Mamikau Yacht Club. Mowai: and Richmond Cruising Club. Rakoa. Tho race was timed to start at 2.-10 p.m., but at that hour only Kokiri put in an appearance and tho officials decided to tielay the start. A few minutes later all | the yachts hove in sight, but tho other races | were started in tho meantime and tho cup j event did not tftart until 3.10 p.m. On tho fail of the last fine Marie crossed the lino first, closely followed by Forest Gold, Venus, Valeria, Kokiri. Varuna, : Rakoa and Mowai, m that order. All cur- 1 tied leaders, while Venus hoisted her spin- \ naker. This, however, gave her a lot of j trouble and she dropped astern. Valeria | drew away from the others and at Queen's j Wharf sho had a nice lead from Kokiri, | Forest Gold and Marie, the remainder | being strung out further astern. Passing King's Wharf tho order was j Valeria, Kokiri. Mowai. Marie. Forest Gold. I Rakoa, Varuna and Venus. Valeria con- j tinned her lead down tho harbour, but at j North Head she had tho misfortune to j break her spinnaker boom and this caused her to drop astern. Forest Gold now took , command and on the flat run out to tho YVhito Light buoy in Kangitoto channel sho improved her position. Rounding tho buoy tho order was Forest Gold. Rakoa, Marie, Valeria, Mowai, Venus and Varuna. Tho boats now hauled on the wind for the bent to Resolution buoy. Forest Gold was still sailina well and was only passed by Rakoa just before reaching tho buoy. Venus also did well and got up with the leaders. Near the buoy Forest Gold caught Venus on tho wrons tack and put her about. Rakoa rounded this mark 1m 25s ahead of Forest Gold. Venus being another 5s further astern. Kokiri was next round, and then came \ aruna, Majie. \ alcria and Mowai, in that order. Passing the Kings Wharf the times were: Rakoa, 'lit 32m oO.i; Forest Gold. 4h 31m Is: Venus, in 34m 2s; Kokiri, -ill 35m 0s; Marie, 4h 35m 30s; Varuna. 4h 35m Valeria. 4h 37m 20s; Mowai. -11 l 41m :;C" Verms passed Forest Gold as f.ooc as Kind's Wharf was cleared, while Kokiri also picked uu on the leaders. Sheets were eased for tho eloso haul up t.ha harbour io the Rona buoy and back jiy U ill. Result: Rakoa, 1; Venus, 2; Forest Gold, 3 THE MACINDOE CUP. Starlight and Spray were the only starters in the race .'or tiie Muiemdo'i Cup (class 11). They kept well together all the way round the course and finished as under:— Starlight (scrj. 4h I'Jm 2!)s; Spray (liiu), 4h 20iu 41s. Result: Spray, 1. SPEIGHT CUP. Wairere, Winifred and V> aiapu started in the race for the Speight Cup (class in i. Winifred got the best of the start and led Wairere until the boats hauled on the wind, when tho latter took charge. the finishing times were:- Wairere (scr), In 14m 45a; Winifred, 4h 15m 9s; Wniapu, 4h •20m lis. Result: Waiapu, 1; Wairere, 2. FOSTKR CUR Ten boats faced the starter in the race for the Foster Cup (class V). Wild Wave was first away and v/as closely followed by Solace, Surprise, Drone, Magic, Leveret, and Kathleen, the others beiriK luto. Surprise took the lead on the beat up the harbour and the finish was timed as follows:—Surprise, 3h 57m 475; Drone, 4h On: 8s; Mystic, 4!i 1m 445; Wild Wave, 4h 2m 50s; Mayic, 4'n 6m 435; Solace. «h 8m 425; Leveret, 4h 17m 475; Kathleen and Scud did not finish. Result (Foster Cup) : Drone 1; Wild Wave, 2; Surprise, 3. The resell of tho race held on reirattn day resulted: Surprise, 1; Drone, 2; Solace, 3. THE ELLISON CUP. Tho start of tho combined rare for classes M and S. the first prize for which was the Ellison Cup, was a good one. Thirteen boats put in an appearance and on the fr.ll of the Inst fins Mawhili led them over the line closely followed by Atangatai, Matarcre and Namu. Mawhiti, Maneno and Matarere had a close race right round the course, the boats continually changing place?. Finally Mawhiti again took the lead and retained it. The finishing times were:—Mawhiti, 4h lm 21s: Ma n cue, 4h lm 3(!s; Matarere, 4h lm BCn: Mollie, 4h 7m 12 a ; Namu, 4h 8m Ins; iJen Bolt, 4h 15m 50s; Rio, 4b 17rn 13s; Son Sleigh, 4h 17m 475; Atangatai, 4h 17m 545; Muru, 4li 19m 81s; Lancia. 4b 20m lis; Torea, 4h 2(hn 275; Verona. 4h 27m 6s; Glady. 4h 29m 38s. Result: Mawhiti. 1- Manene, 2; Matarere, 3. The resail of the race for class S, held on regatta day, resulted :-•■-Rio, 1; Ben Bolt, 2; Namu, 3. HEWSON MEMORIAL CUP. The ntart of this race was an unsatisfactory one, both Rona and Idler being late through a misunderstanding regarding the time of starting, ltui'igi got away first, closely followed by Joan, and once in the lead was never Vieaded. The finishing times were:—i»,an;'i, 41i 27m 225; Joan, 4h 20m 12s; Rona 4h 29m 345. Idler gave tip. Result: Rangi, 1; Joan, 2; Rona, 3. The boats were sailed by youths under 21 years of THE KOIJ.N CUP. The race for classses T atid Y brought ou» | sis competitors, Ngaio crossing the lino first, followed by Meteor, Alert and Kismet. Alert look tho lead early in the race and the finish was timed:—Alert, 4h 17m 47; i; S<»a Gnome, 4h ]Btr> 82<: Ngaio, 'Hi 2.1 m 32b ; fiea Davit, 4b 27m 12s; Meteor, 4h 27m 28s. Kismet did not finish. Result: Sea Gnome, 1; Sea Dawn, 2; Ngaio. 3.
