THE MANGERE CARNIVAL.
VERY SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. Over sixty motor-cars, a large number of which were decorated, took part in the procession from the Royal Oak t,r» Mangere on Saturday afternoon, to inaugurate the Progressive League's carnival. At the bridge they were joined by a number of decorated trolleys and b : cycles. Their arrival at the Mangere "Oomain was the signal for the formal cpening of "Ye Okie English Fayre," at which the attendance far exceeded expectations. Besides the usual variety of stalls, a novelty was provided in the form of a Maori whare, decorated in the usual native fashion, and the Maori residents of the district used this as a popular stall for selling Maori kits and mats Th<* sports programme was varied with item? by the Pukaki Maori band. Maori hakas and poi dances 'formed an attractive feature of the afternoon and evening, and were especially appreciated when the grounds were illuminated by coloured electric lights. The attendance in the evening was estimated at 4000. Altogether the carnival was a great success and the Mangere Progressive League is now provided with' substantial funds for the purpose of beautifying the two areas at the entrance to the district by the bridge.
