GERMAN AEROPLANES.

SOUTH AFRICAN CONTRACT. SMALL SUBSIDY ACCEPTED. Sun. CAPETOWN. .Feb. 16. South Africa will probably soon have the-distinction of being, the only British Dominion with a civil aviation service run with German. machines and financed by a German firm. Tho Government invited tenders from overseas based on a subsidy of £BOOO a year, which was embodied in next year's estimates. British firms offered to tender provided that the subsidy amounted to £45,000. A German firm tendered and the Air Board decided that its machines would be suitable, but stipulated that the service should not begin until South Africans had been trained to fly in them. In the event of a war tho Government would requisition the machines. The contract is to be reviewed at the end of a year. The framing of the contract has been delayed owing to the German firm not having responded to a 'cablegram asking for guarantees. Citizens are asking if the German Government is subsidising the service.
