COAL STRIKE SETTLED.
HIKURANGI MINE DISPUTE. TROUBLE OVER TRUCKERS. NO WORK DONE FOR TWO DAYS. MEN RESUME THIS MORNING. The strike at tho Hikurangi Coal Company's mine "was settled yesterday afternoon and the men will return to work thi<. morning. The trouble arose, according to the management, because two young trucker* used abusive language to the urider-hewer and also committed breaches of the Mines Act by leaving the mine without first obtaining permission. Tho Miners' Union Is said to have demanded' the reinstatement of the truckers failing which the men would come out on strike. Reinstatement was not granted and the men ceased work on Monday afternoon, A conference was held yesterday betweeu the mine superintendent, Mr. H. Dickson, and tho miners' executive. n, n inspector of the Labour Department, Mr. R. Grieve, who left for Hikurangi on Tuesday, was also present. After long discussion a settlement was reached am! the men are to return to work this morning. The terms of the settlement havo not been disclosed.
