MOTOR-BUS CONTROL.
LONDON VISITOR'S VIEWS. COMMENT IN WELLINGTON. INCONSISTENCY ALLEGED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. "Assuming that Mr. Mason is correctly reported, his views come as a great surprise," said Mr. B. L. Hammond, in reference. to an interview with Mr. G. Mason, of the London General Omnibus organisation, on the question of motor-bus control, published in the Herald this week. Mr. Mason expressed the opinion that regulation was essential and fce was surprised at the opposition being shown to the proposed regulations in New Zealand, as cntrol of motor-bus traffic was a well established principle in Britain. Mr. Hammond, who acted as spokesman for the motor omnibus proprietors and allied motor trades at the recent conference regarding control, said a fortnight ago Mr. Mason voluntarily placed his knowledge and experience at the disposal of the motor omnibus proprietors and the allied motor trades in offering opposition to the proposed regulations, and actually rendered material assistance, both in framing the representations to the Gvernment, and in combating the argument of the tramway delegates at the recent conference. "The statement that the regulations, as originally drafted, are essential in the interests of the municipalities which own the trams and the bus concerns also, is wholly opposed to the views expressed by Mr. Mason throughout the negotiations," continued Mr. Hammond. "It is difficult to reconcile it with Mr. Mason's oft-repeated assertion that this company alone had lost £37,000 through being legislated off the roads in Melbourne, that the company's buses in Sydney were now lying in garages awaiting sale, and the company was expecting some measure of ■relief under M . Lang's proposal to pay between £2,50u,000 and £3,000.,000 by way of compensation to omnibus proprietors. ''
