OBITUARY.

. MR. JOHN CORNES. An old identity in the Thames Valley, Mr. John Comes, died recently at his home, Te Mata, aged 76 years. He was born in Paisley, Scotland, and after leaving school followed the sen for some years, trading to the Baltic, C anada, and . the East Indies. The goldfielis, first oi Australia and then of Now Zealand,' attracted him in the early "seventies." Much of his life was spent at Te Aroha, wharf) he was for some years chairman of thi. committee of the Goldfields iSchool; Twentyfive years ago he took up land in' Te Mata, cut a track into the virgin bush, and hewed and pit-sawed a home ffom the totara and rirnu. Mr. Cornes was for some years chairman of the Settlers' Cooperative Dairy Company He wa« married 60 years ago-,-to Miss Mary Mac* Pherson, of Pokeno, sistiir of the late Messrs. James and George MacPherpon, of Maungatawhiri Valley, early colonists, who arrived with the f'oiteno settlers in the ship Helen Lee. Ho is survived bv Mrs. Gornes and a family of six ".sous-and one daughter, Messrs. J. O. Cornes, of Waihi, G. Cornes, of Auckland, T. Cornes, of Raglan, H. Cornes, of Hastings, A. and W. Cornes, and Mrs. 0. Saunders, of Te .Mata, There are 29 grandchildren. MR. MICHAEL DROMGOOL. Mr. Michael Dromgool, whose death took place at his residence, Armadale Road. Remuera, oti Monday, was well known 5". the Waiuku district. Ho c»l»e to Kew Zealand with his parents when a child, ana the family settled at Glen brook about 70 years ago. Their original farm is still held by "a member of the family, Mr. 0. Dromgool. Mr, Michael Dromgool had a farm near the Glenbrook school and another at Aka Aka. He leaves a widow and a son, Mr. P. Dromgool, oi Waiuku. SIR. if. It. SIMEON. ' The death has occurred at Greymoui'i of Mr. Herbert Richard Simeon, who has been a sufferer, from war wounds sine? 1917. Mr. Simeon came of a military family, his father being the. late Colonel Simeon, of Gisborne, formerly of tje Royal Horse Artillery, and his mother a daughter of the late General Willows, of England. Mr. Simeon .was a member of the relief force which landed at Samoa in the early days, of the war and he proceeded later, to France, where he was wounded. He spent, a year in Auckland after the war, then taking up residence at Greymouth. He is survived by his wne and four children. A brother, Mai or '■ E. Simeon, resides at The Drive, Epsom. A military funeral: was accorded.
