NAVY FOR INDIA.
HOSTILITY OF THE PRESS. THE QUESTION OF EXPENSE. CALCUTTA Feb., 11. Apart from the Bengalee, a moderate journal, the Indian press of Calcutta is bitterly hostile to the proposal to reconstruct the Royal Indian Marine 'as'- a combatant force, to bo known, subject to the King's approval, as the Royal Indian Navy. • .; ' • • It is' described; as adding; annually £llO, OCX) to India's expenditure fn/orisr to secure one appointment yearly of an Indian; as an officer of of the new navy. Although for years past. Indian politicians have been clamouring .to" have their own navy, yet the proposal that the new navy should police the Persian, Gulf has been received-, with .great, suspicion, as indicating a British plan to relieve itself of Imperial burdens n> ,which are to be foisted on India. The European press, generally, is rot enthusiastic, in view, of the failure cf the Indianisatlon of the army, and'is m-' clined to think it would be surprising' if' one Indian naval officer was found yearly. ~
