An exciting tussle with a broadbill swerdfish was experienced at Mercury Bay yesterday by Mr. EL J. Clendon and Dr. Liggins, of Thames, fishing from the launch Settler. While they were having lnnch in the vicinity of tho Alderman Islands a line, which had been left carelessly lying with the baited hook hi*ng» ing over the side of the boat, commenced to run out at a great; rate. Just as the owner reached the engines an enormous bill pierced the water 20yds. away, followed by the huge bulk of a swordfish, which leaped high in the air. The fish jumped repeatedly in its efforts to free itself, from the baited hooks, and then sounded and headed oat to sea.

The fight then began to earnest. Occasionally the fish ran along the surface of the water, angrily tossing its head. The launchman had a trying time at the engines in following the flight of the fish.

After, a battle of over five hoars, with the launch 15 miles out of its course, the b word fish freed itself from the hooks and escaped.
