CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. THE DUTY ON FOWL WHEAT. The council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce met yestarday, Mr. A. A, Martin, president, presiding. . It was agreed that the chamber should support a proposal made by the-Auckland Grain Merchants.' Association to the Government, that in view of the rescission of control over wheat, the duty on fo-v] wheat should be done away withit was ei-pkined that, there were ample safeguards against the use of fowl wheat for other purpose. A request from the Department of Industries and Commerce for the chamber's co-operation in having New Zealand properly represented et tha Canadian National Exhibition, to be open at Toronto for ii fortnight' in June, was referred to the incoming executive. The letter stated the Jtfew Zealand Government had liiken 12,0C0 square feet of space, and wished to exhibit manufactures its wall as priniiary products. The Waikato Swamp Development League wrote inviting the council to take part in the inspection of an area of 250 acriss of improved swamp land in the Waikato on March 18. It was decided to askiorfurther particulars of the . crip. Massni. F. A. Kall&by, H. W. Hudson - and M. Stewart were appointed a subcommittee to draft suggestions for the improvement. the bankruptcy law, for submission to the council of the Association of Chambers of Commerce, which stated if. had hopi3s of obtaining amead■feg legislation next session. A complaint was received "flrom.fthe One Tree Hill Bo&d Board that it ha;d great difficulty in collecting rate from several returned soldier ratepayers, owing to the protection gitfen them by the law. It was dec:di,id to reply that the chamber had lately asked for the repeal cf legislation protecting returned soldiers from tha ordinary legal procosses for' the recovery of debti! arid enforcement of contracts, and to forward a copy of a letter which stated/the request was being considered • by the Minister of Justice. In response to a request from ithe Ancklanil braiach of the New Zealand Instate of Awihitects, it was agreed that the chairman, Mr. F. L. Moodie, should be allowed 20 minutes at the annual meeting to-morrow for an address upon advertising o:i iyiuldings.
