THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE. MANY SUBJECTS DISCUSSED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT, j DUNEDIN. Tuesday. The twelfth annual conference of the New Zealand Society of Civil. Eugineers opened this morning, the president, Mr. F. J. Jones, presiding. The Mayor, Mr. H. L. Tapley,. M.P., welcomed the dele- ' • ■ ' - '• . The report showed a, membership of 391, and .urged that all members of the society, junior and senior, vhether or ■ not their qualifications are, higher than the standard enacted by the Act. should apply for registration under the Engineers' Eagistration Act.
Messrs. F.- W. McLean, C. J. R. Williams and A. J. Paterson were elected members of the council. It was resolved to hold the next conference at Auckland. ' v .
Discussion on a recent suggestion made by the Minister in reference to the establishment of a local government board led to the adoption of a resolution: " That the conference requests the Government to supply members of the society with an outline of the proposals or a draft of the bill before it is finally adopted, bo that the society may give a considered opinion, it being thought that many of the members, being engineers to local bodies, might render valuable assistance in framing legislation." A committee was appointed to inquiie into the best methods of bringing about unity and co-operation between engineers throughout the Empire. The address of the retiring president traversed every phase of railway government and engineering. At the evening session, papers were read by Mr. A. H. M. Wright on " Gravelsurfaced Roads," and by Mr. R. W. Holmes on " Roads in Province of Quebec, Canada." Lengthy discussions on the merits of various surfaces followed.
