SPRING MEETING. The Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meeting opens at Riccarton to-day, and tho gathering will be continued on the succeeding Monday, Wednesday, and featur day. The leading event of the t/rogramine on the opening day is the New Zeainn Cup, on the second day the New Zealan Derby will take precedence, on Wednesday the Canterbury Cup will have the premier place, and on the concluding day the Stea Memorial Cup will be brought up tor decision. The weather was squally for training at Riccarton this morning, a southerly wind bringing a sharp shower of rain. It was an off morning, ana not many horses went fast. Most of the work was done on the plough. Haze beat Nincompoop over three furlongs in 37 2-ss. Kilfaire and Kaiti went a mile in 1m 46 2-ss. Deucalion did a working gallop on No, 7 track, taking lm 20 2-53. March Past ran half a mile in 51 1-53, Fool's Paradise taking 51 3-ss. Kalakaua and Zouave went seven furlongs in lm 335. Ciareina ran three furlongs on No. 7 track in 395. , Merry Singer, Sir Fanciful, and Red Head went a mile in lm 51s. Kukume and Waetea went a mile and a quarter in 2ra 15 3-ss. ... Rivalry and Serotina ran half a mile.m 50 '2-ss, .Commendation taking 50s, going practically from a stand. Kilmiss did a working gallop over six furlongs, the last three taking 41s. Polythemus went three furlongs in 3" 3-ss. REVIEW OF THE FIELDS. [BY TELEGKAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. To-morrow will witness the opening of what promises to be one of the most successful spring meetings ever held at Riccarton. It has attracted s. great crowd of visiting horses, and with large fields drawn from widely-separated districts, ami representing the Lest class, we are assured of some fine snort. The weather prospects are a trifle uncertain, this being the only doubtful feature. We have uad a dry spell, not a southerly buster blew up to-day, Svingmg a few showers of rain, and the sky remairt threatening, while the _ weather predictions are for more rain. Visitors aze from North and South in large numbers, and favourable weather is all that is required to ensure success. The New Zealand Cup presents an extremely open appearance. In the racing that has taken place during the early spring many Cup candidates have won, but there have been no outstanding performances. Indications point to Count Cavour or Te Kara being favourite. The former has come into the limelight again on account of his Rangiora Cup win, while he finished up his preparation with a really good mite and aquarter on Thursday. As for Te Kara, he has done a lot of attractive work, and always with his full Cup weight in the saddle. The Banker, Tanadee3 and Tresham have their admirers, but while they have all worked well. I cannot help the ieeling that Count Cavour should beat them just as he did in fhree-year-old races. Deucalion has done a searching preparation and has never been so well as he is now. Merry Day does not appeal on a hard track, and Kilfaire is another I fancy only moderately well. Among the light-weights I like Shining Airoour a lot. He looks a stayer. Carpentier is another who may show up at the end. The staying qualities of Te Kara may make him n better favourite than Count Cavour, while Deucalion is entitled to be as Well backed as anything else. There are some brilliant sprinters in the Stewards ' Handicap. The three-year-old Money Order is likely to be favourite, and there is no doubt he is brilliant. Mireusonta. another great beginner, will also be heavily backed, and probably Mimetic and Inferno have most friends among the others. It. must be admitted, however, that it is an open race in which luck will play a part. There is no doubt as to favouritism in the Welcome Stakes. Commendation is a handsome colt, and a great galloper, as he showed bv a brilliant half-mile, from a stand this morning. Apart from him, Limited takes my fancy most among the two-year-olds. The North Island has a strong contingent in the Spring Hurdles, but En Route is a great jumper, who wtll keep the visitors busy. I expect to see Sir Fanciful racing well before the meeting ia over. Ilaae should be favourite for the Spring Plate. Rivalry may keep him busy, though she disappointed in a gallop on Thursday. There are some useful hacks in the Linwood. Handicap, which may te run in divisions. The imported horse .Celerity 11. is very speedy, and may be favourite. March Past is another English filly who gallops well, while Serotina is a local candidate with good claims, which she has not yet produced in public. Kilmiss will be strongly fancied for the Apprentices' Handicap, but Jarretiere is a likely light-weight. In this race, too, is Centrepiece, a good galloper, but with a doubt us to whether he is genuine. If he is he will not only go well in this race, but in more important events, as he shapes like Trie Derby candidate Runnymede will probably be favourite for the Riccarton Welter, in which Footfall and Clandhu are others who may take -a hand in the settlement of the question.
