STORM AND BUSH FIRES.
WIDESPREAD DAMAGE DONE, j EXPERIENCE IN AUSTRALIA. I A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Oct. 13. j The storm experienced yesterday swept ; a large portion of New South Wales and ; parts of Central Australia and Southern j Queensland. It caused widespread damage. I Bush fires, which were raging over the whole of the North ( oast area, caused extensive damage. Hie losses caused by the, storm will amount to many thousands uf pounds. Many small craft'in the Sydney Harbour were sunk. Hie P. and O. liner Maloja broke away from her moorings, but was reberthed without damage. The wind carried fine dust for hundreds of miles, casting a lurid shade over the j countryside. On the cutskiits of Sydney torrential j rain flooded the low-lying areas, but j served the purpose of extinguishing the j bush fires, which were raging in the { suburbs. There were many narrow escapes from j injury bv falling debris. One house at j Vaucluse was struck by lightning and j partially demolished. The inmates were j buried m the ruins, one being slightly j in jurcd. During the height <>f the gale the town- j ship of Charles.town, near Newcastle, was | completely surrounded by bush tires.
