ENGLISH COUNTY CRICKET. YORKSHIRE'S CLOSE VICTORY. (Received 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z.—Reuter. LONDON. Aus. 18. The sensation of to-day's county cricket matches was Yorkshire's victory over Sussex. The latter required 144 runs to win and had eight wickets in hand. They still had six wickets left at lunch timo and only 40 runs were needed. Then a startling change came. Macaulay, who was most deadly with the ball, took four wickets in quick succession. Kilner secured one and then Macaulay finished tho innings. The last si.s wickets only produced 17 runs. Tho scores in this match were:—Yorkshire, first innings, 119; second innings, 230 (Oldroyd 77, Robinson 54). Sussex, first innings, 87; second innings, 239 (Bowley 105). Macaulay's average was seven for 67. Yorkshire thus won by 23 runs. Playing against Notts, Middlesex in their first innings made 175 (Hendren 71), and in their second 260 (Hearne 52). Notts in their first innings scored 331 (Carr 54, Whysall 78, Lilley 65). The second innings yielded 106 for seven wickets. Notts won by threo wickets. Bowling for Hampshire against Leicester Kennedy took seven wickets for 32. Hampshire won. For Derby against Lancashire Morton took soven wickets for 51. Lancashire won. For Kent against Gloucester Woolley made 176. Freeman in the first innings took six wickets for 34, and in the second six for 114. Kent won. LAWN TENNIS IN AMEP.ICA. '■*> WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP. The British representatives, however, all came through the second round. Misses McKano and Fry were most impressive. Quick and decisivo results were tho rule iu most of the singles, but the period of easy victories now appears to bo over. Of the 16 players, who survived the second round 10 are of representative rank. The others include Miss Ryan, who, it is conceded, has an even chance for the title with Misses Wills, McKano and Penelope Anderson, of Virginia. Mrs. Bundy defeated another promising Californian, Miss Charlotte Hbsmer, 2—6, 6—4, 6—3. Mrs. Bundy, tho 1905 champion, appears to be playing with her old craft and speed.
